Job Description

Kirlin Carolinas, a large scale commercial mechanical and plumbing contractor in the Raleigh/Durham area, with branch offices in SC, specializing in hospitals, R&D, plan & spec and design build, is currently hiring for project managers in the Raleigh area. We self-perform HVAC piping, plumbing, and the installation of equipment associated with our projects throughout North and South Carolina.  Our projects range from $1 MM to $30 MM mechanical contract value.

We are currently looking for a SENIOR PROJECT ENGINEER to join Kirlin Carolinas, LLC.

Position Overview

The Senior Project Engineer will be assigned to one or multiple projects and has the primary responsibility of ensuring the project(s) design deliverables support the successful execution of each project. This person reports to the Project Executive(s) and supports each Project Manager(s) by working collaboratively with internal and external team members to ensure all design interface points are successfully delivered per the project schedule(s). Design interface points include:

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • General engineering activities: Work proactively and collaboratively with internal and external team members to provide technical support; including prompt issue identification and resolution. Schedule, coordinate and monitor all design activities associated with the project(s).
  • BIM/coordination activities: Ensures all internal resources and our sub-suppliers are executing the design activities to support the project schedules. Monitors compliance of design submittals with applicable codes, QA/QC policies, project performance standards and specifications. Ensures value engineering items are incorporated into the design. Ensures all design activities are provided to pre-fabrication and support the project construction schedule(s).
  • Engineering submittals: Supports the Project Manager by ensuring all submittals (internal and/or from our vendors and subcontractors) are provided to the customer per the project schedules. Ensures timely review of submittals by the customer. Ensures a complete response to any revise and resubmit activities such that repetitive submittal cycles are avoided. Will work with the Project Management staff, Field personnel, BIM and Purchasing Departments in order to develop a “Kirlin Standard” for items commonly used on our projects.

The Senior Project Engineer may also be responsible for performing and/or overseeing the design for complex mechanical, HVAC, process piping, medical gas, laboratory, clean rooms, and/or plumbing projects. Heavy focus on Design Build commercial projects with healthcare and laboratory experience a plus.

Qualification Requirements

  • Education: BS Mechanical Engineer or Architectural
  • Experience: Minimum 5 years of experience
  • Skills: Efficient in Revit, AutoCAD and Microsoft Excel, Word, Project.
  • Abilities: Mechanical design including HVAC, ductwork and piping layout and design, system sizing, humidity and temperature control, plumbing, and other design tasks related to mechanical engineering
  • Must be able to interpret and apply codes including NFPA, IBC, ASHRAE, UFGS and UFC criteria.
  • Experience in Hospital, Laboratory (BSL 3 & BSL 4)

Technical Knowledge: Design of complex mechanical, HVAC, process piping, medical gas, laboratory, clean rooms, and/or plumbing projects. Relies on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals including:

  • Strong knowledge of relevant building Codes and Standards
  • Strong understanding of mechanical building systems design and stays current with advancing technologies
  • Excellent working knowledge of B.I.M. using Revit and AutoCAD
  • Ability to clearly set expectations and collaboratively drive results with internal and external project members
  • Competent with design tools including, load calculation, sizing, and equipment selection
  • Knowledge of energy modeling, stress analysis and CFD a plus
  • Working knowledge of MS Office Suite, particularly as it applies to project work
  • Knowledge of the mechanical construction process to improve design documents
